![]() SCHEDULE A TOURNVVAM EDUCATION VISITORS GUIDE NVVAM Partnership with Teachers: Visiting The Museum Guide TEACHERS Because every class is different, so is every museum presentation. To make each one is meaningful, we will try and develop it from the information you provide about your class in an initial phone conversation. We always try to incorporate content and activities that meet the needs, interests and abilities of your students. Our presentations will include activities designed to maximize student participation, as you may feel fits your need. For instance, using gallery docents as facilitators rather than only didactic lecturers, a variety of teaching strategies, including writing, drawing, movement and discussion activities, can enrich your students’ museum experience, while helping them develop specific skills or their understanding of a concept or subject matter that have been successfully expanded and tailored for different grade levels to complement history, social studies, and the creative arts curricula. Some activities are designed primarily for whole-group discussion; others are meant to be done in partnerships or small groups, followed by an opportunity to share discoveries and observations with the whole group (10-15 students). While these activities were originally developed for use in the museum with original works of art, some may be transferable for use with a reproduction in the classroom. OBJECTIVES OF PARTNERSHIP • Focus on helping students feel welcome and comfortable in the Museum • Provide a variety of opportunities for participation, including stimulating questions and gallery activities • Allow teachers to develop a customized curriculum • Plan with the Museum’s education staff, using works of art as integral primary resources for their students. • Offer students opportunities to learn about and work with the museum collection in different ways. • Include 3 or more visits to the museum, beginning with a general visit followed by a series of focused visits. SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION • Willingness to use art in your classroom and the knowledge that art has the power to teach students about themselves and their world. • Time to collaborate with Museum staff, to reflect on how the Museum can support your curriculum and to visit the Museum with your students. • Transportation to and from the Museum Self-Guided School Group Visits We also welcome you to the NVVAM for your self-guided school tour. The information below will be helpful in planning group excursions to the NVVAM Museum artist and educators are available to meet or talk with you to plan a valuable experience for you and your students. There are a number of easy-to-use activities that you can employ during your visit. We will be happy to help you select the activity or activities that best suits your class; call the telephone numbers listed below for more information. Because of limited space in the NVVAM and the high number of scheduled tours, we ask that all teachers schedule visits for any groups of five or more. Call one of the numbers listed at the bottom of this page to schedule your visit with a museum educator. When you call, please provide the following information: 1. The number of participants/students in your entire group; 2. The preferred day and time you wish to visit. A museum educator will contact you to confirm your visit, or to reschedule another day or time, if your preferred day and time is unavailable. Please arrange to have one adult chaperone for every 7-10 students under the age of 18. This will help insure a positive experience for the children in your group and for other museum visitors. PLEASE NOTE: We can NOT accomodate more than 50-75 middle school students at a time. There needs to be approximately 1 chaperone for every 10 students. If chaperones are not sufficiently supervising students, that group will be asked to leave. The students are the CHAPERONES' AND SCHOOL'S responsibility at all times. Please keep the following in mind when planning your trip: • The number of self-guided visitors that the NVVAM can accommodate at a given time varies from day to day. • The number of students participating in pre-scheduled tours as well as the number of other visitors that are present in the galleries will influence what spaces in the Museum will be available to and comfortable for your group when you visit. • You and your students will have a more positive experience if all group participants are familiar with Museum’s rules and why they are enforced. Museum security and other staff are on hand to see that students abide by these rules. Staff reserves the right to escort a visitor out of the Museum if his/her behavior is thought to put other visitors or works of art at risk.
