ISSUED AND BEYOND: ONE MARINE'S TIME IN COUNTRY LESSON PLANS AND ACTIVITIES ACTIVITY 1 There is A LOT to see in this exhibit. What kinds of things did the students see on which they wanted more information? Some examples might be: the ace of spades card mythology in the Vietnam War; Jane Fonda; the importance of the MIA/POWs to Vietnam Veterans in particular. ACTIVITY 2 What kind of person do the students think Don is? ACTIVITY 3 Are there any sayings on the stickers or t-shirts that the kids liked or were confused by? ACTIVITY 4 This exhibit is as much about being a Marine as it is about being a Vietnam Veteran. A t-shirt on being a Marine says: “From the OutsideYou can’t understand it...From the inside, I can’t explain it.” What does this mean? Why might this be true for Marines? Post-museum visit reflection discussion/essay: Relate the preceding sentiment about being a Marine to the phrase: “Freedom has a price that the protected will never know.” Did the students’ visit to the museum, the artwork and speaker make either of these statements more significant to the students? Did their experience at the museum render either or both of these statements true or false (did their overall experience here cause them to think that they can know the cost of freedom or did it drive home the point that a civilian can’t ever truly know the sacrifices of soldiers, etc?)? |
